IT managers rank Dell tops in customer satisfaction

Dell Computer Corp. once again scored first in customer satisfaction among corporations buying the company's notebooks, desktops and servers -- ranking No. 1 for this quarter -- but its competitors are gaining ground, a new survey shows.
In a statement released earlier this week, Hampton, N.H.-based Technology Business Research (TBR) said a poll of 278 information technology managers showed that Dell, in Austin, Texas, ranked first in terms of delivery, setup, reliability, price and volume.
Dell's desktop scores far outpaced the competition, rising 2.7% from the previous quarter to 86.2%. However, IBM made significant headway, gaining 7.4% to 82.2%, the statement said.
Dell's lead grew even smaller in the notebook and server areas, TBR, in Hampton, N.H., said in the statement. Compaq Computer Corp.'s approval rating in this segment jumped 10.3%, to 79%, compared with Dell's modest 0.8% gain to 84.7%. IBM also did well, up 7.4% to 82.82%.
Among servers, Dell scored 87.4%, up 2.3%; Hewlett-Packard Co.'s customer approval rating edged up 1.1% to 85.87%; Compaq's ranking rose 3.9% to 85.85%; and IBM gained 4.9% to 84.71%, the statement said.
