For the early news on the OS plans check-out:

stage.macworld.com

It seems that after all the media hysteria, Apple is making a rational decision after all. Some key highlights:

1) Support for the "classic" system 7 for years to come.

2) A new OS wrapped around a UNIX core. One need only look at all scientific computing to realize that UNIX is the way to go. In the old days we saw a specialized OS for each machine that came out (consider the Cray's OS and VMS, for example). UNIX became the standard because it provided the fastest port to new architectures. A built-in minimal time to market.

3) A "blue" window for existing applications, and a "yellow" window for those supported in the new OS. Even extensions will run in the "yellow" window (they will match the bugs in the current system).

4) A consistent Mac look and feel.

I see a long-term winner here.

Finally, wait till the Time magazine with Bill Gates hits the streets. He trashes organized religion and claims that there is nothing unique about human intelligence. Can anyone hear boycott here?

In the computer world, the mighty can fall as fast as they rise.
