Contrary to the opinions of some, PC Magazine calls Zip "the current standard" in the November 17th issue, on the Second Looks - Living with the Products We Review page. The article is by Edward Mendelson.
The full text of the article will probably be online soon, but in the meantime, here are a few tidbits.
"The Iomega Zip Drive remains king of the hill among removable drives, and even the widely reported troubles with a small number of Zip Drives probably won't dethrone it in the near future. Every Windows PC needs a large-volume removable disk drive in addition to a 1.44MB floppy disk drive, a CD-ROM and a hard disk. The Zip Drive's 100MB capacity, fast transfer rates, relatively low price, and wide availability have made it the current standard."
There is some mention of the Click of Death syndrome, with the note that "Iomega has acknowledged that a small fraction of one percent of Zip Drives suffer from this syndrome. We haven't experienced this problem, but you can access online literature on the subject through the Gibson Research Web site (www.grc.com), which also offers a free utility for Zip Drive testing."
The last line of the article states, "If you want to be able to share removable disks with other users, they're more likely to have Zip than anything else."
I believe that PC Magazine has the largest circulation of all the computer magazines. In my opinion, this is a clear indication that the industry as a whole has NOT decided that Zip is obsolete. Far from it.
