I'm afraid that changing the parameters based on market conditions or volatility will defeat the purpose of disciplined trading based on a proven system. The system that I use was optimized with 3 yrs of historical data, and does depend somewhat on an interpretation of the general trend of the sector. If the long term trend is up, naturally you want to stay long for as long as possible. During an up trend the later sell system is more profitable. If the long term trend is down, the early sell system gets you out in time to avoid losses. osxstocks.com
The peak sell system I use essentially to confirm the sell signals of the later sell system, and fairly consistently gives sell signals right at the blow-off peak of trading in the sector.

Of course the trading system is worthless if the sector goes straight down (stochs never get high enough to trigger a needed sell signal) like it did in May of this year, or if it goes straight up like it used to before the "Great Decline" which began in November of 1997

So the system does have limitations and you have to be confident in your interpretion of the overall trend of the sector. Hovever, it has been quite predictive for the last 9mths after it was developed (except for the precipitous decline in May like I said).

I'm fairly confident that we will be in a flat trend until the price of oil recovers significantly and consistently. My main risk will come from being out when the sector does go straight up (which eventually it will. I'm thinking at least another 6 mths or so). In the mean time I'll take advantage of the volatility of the sector on the up-side and the down-side.
