I don't see why a thread has to be kept "pure". A thread gets a lot of its continuity from the people who post on it, partly because you come to know the people and they make more sense (or less) as you get to know them.

Also, I see people apologizing for going off the topic, but I don't see anyone objecting to OT's. Could we loosen up a little? I don't want to have to go searching for the right thread every time I get an idea that is a little tangential. The reason this came up in the first place was because of the tone of the posts, rather than the content. If a post doesn't interest me, I click next. If it is too off topic then no one will respond.

There's the argument that it's harder to find the pertinent information in a thread if it's clogged up with OT stuff. Well, 1) I think the here and now is more important than the legacy we leave behind (aside from issues of honor, etc., of course), and 2)usually a topic that has been thrashed and disected and digested on a good thread can be summarized quickly by a contributor.
