IBM mainframes - dates

IBM mainframes CPU's have 3 clocks :
TOD - time of day (--> hardware)
Clock comparator - used for timing events
CPU timer - used for JCL (anyone know JCL out there??)

A person in COBOL codes ACCEPT DATE which puts the date
in the form 01/07/97 in a field in storage. How does
this crash when the 97 becomes 00???
