For the hard core techies, in the November 1998 IEEE Journal of Solid State Circuits:

Sony describes its single chip MPEG-2 encoder (1.2 watts; includes an onboard programmable controller) on page 1765.

DEC describes a low cost RISC processor with attached media processing unit. It is a 300 MHz StrongARM CPU and the media processor portion can do MPEG-2 and AC-3 decode with leftover horsepower for graphics, software modems, etc. I believe that Intel has rights to this design through its buyout of DEC. page 1829
