Frankly, I can't think of too many smart things he's done. A lot of what he has touched, has failed. However, I guess since he has so much money (mainly thanks to Bill Gates), he doesn't know what to do with it. As for MCOM, this company is going to lie rather dormant/dead for a while. They just cannot compete with their business model - even with Autobahn it's too damn slow and restrictive. There isn't a mass market for thier product. I've studied it thoroughly, worked in it, built a fair number of applications in this business, etc. and am convinced it's not going to grow till well in to 2001 and that too assuming the are able to cover entire regions of the country. If not, they might as well forget it since the cellular/PCS networks will be able to provide better coverage - maybe not at tremendous speeds, but that's secondary.
