Dr. Scannon says:

"XOMA is using an LBP assay to monitor patients enrolled in its ongoing Neuprex® clinical
trials to collect additional data that may further prove the usefulness of this approach."

I believe this means just what it says. The LBP diagnostic assay is not used to set a benchmark for prognosis or determine which patients are in a similar stage to assure a more exact balance between treated and placebo groups. The Glasgow scale for all participants must be at least 8, ( if I remember correctly). Of course the assay is being used to gather additional data, but I still would maintain that it is not being used in the selection process. If I understand this at all for future trial design one could select patients by LBP levels to assure that there were an equal number of similar LBP level individuals in each group. (simplified example for me in case I read this again).

Feel free to tell me I am wrong, as I have no special knowledge nor background about trial design, biotechnology, medicine, science etc. etc. I do however se how determination of LBP levels could be used in future trials, especially where there was no standard like the Glasgow scale, where the superiority of the assay would not need to be demonstrated before being accepted in place of the scale.
