<INTC will be brought to its knees, still fixing 450NX chipset problems on their GTL+ bus, finally enabling 8xSMP on overpriced XEONs (then $2500 for the 2MB CSRAM model) while AMD will be steaming ahead. I wonder what INTC can do to prevent this from happening - my guess is...
NOTHING !!!
why do You all have to do it alone when partnering with others can be so efficient ???>
Sigh.
First of all, there are no problems in the 450NX chipset, nor in the GTL+ bus. The problems exist in the processor itself that only manifest when used in 4-way configs. If you haven't heard, Intel recently fixed these problems and is now on track to meeting the very high demand for Xeon.
Second, the eight-way Xeon platform wasn't developed at Intel. It was developed by Corollary in their Profusion technology, which was recently purchased by Intel. You seem to hint that Intel had no excuse for releasing the 8-way Xeon so late, as if it's even conceivable that AMD will release the 8-way K7 platform at the same time as the uniprocessor K7.
Third, it's funny how you still think the 2 MB Xeon is overpriced, when benchmarks show that 4-way Xeon servers, even with 2 MB L2 cache in each processor, trounce every other enterprise server in the price/performance ratios. Of course, we can always count on AMD to kamakaze the prices, resulting in lower margins for both companies.
Fourth, AMD isn't the only one who's partnering with Compaq and other companies for technology-sharing. Intel also has agreements with Compaq, HP, IBM, etc. The difference is that AMD has no choice but to share technologies with other companies. Intel can make a choice between in-house R&D and technology-sharing.
Finally, thinking that Intel is just going to stand and do nothing while AMD strives to push ahead with the K7 is just plain naive.
