Hi Jackie,

The thalidomide incident was a tragedy but animal testing, which is performed quite early in the drug testing stage, would have clearly shown thalidomide to be an animal teratogen. Thalidomide does not cause birth defects in lab rodents (e.g. mice, rats), but it does induce a spectrum of birth defects (similarly seen in humans) in rabbits at doses equivalent to human exposure.
