The paths in the switching system (if ATM switch) are typically established by a number of ways depending on the switch architecture. Some examples will be shared memory, shared Bus, Crossbar, multistage, Banyan, etc. The connection paths across the ATM network(s) can be computed based on topology (this topology may be part of PNNI topology database propagation).
