Embedded PowerPC processors have excited the embedded systems market for quite some time, so I am not exactly sure what you are implying. I remember in the spring of 1995 when Microtec Research, then a public company with symbol MTEC, announced they would not be able to port to the PowerPC until the following December. The announcement was given as a partial reason for their poor quarterly performance. The stock tanked, only to be somewhat rescued by the Mentor Graphics takeover that summer.

At the time, porting to the emerging PowerPC was both a bragging point and a requirement for leading RTOS vendors. As I understand it, however, for most vendors the port was more complicated than most.
