Hayes Licenses Aware's ADSL Modem Solution

Modem technology supports up to 8Mbps over standard telephone lines

BEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc. and AWARE INC today
announced an agreement whereby Hayes will license Aware's asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL)
technology, data communications software and ADSL hardware modules to develop modems for DMT-
based ADSL customer premise equipment (CPE).

"We are delighted with Hayes' decision to license Aware's ADSL technology," said Jim Bender, Aware
President and CEO. "Hayes will provide a key element to the industry by offering Customer Premise
Equipment through mass market distribution channels."

"Communications users want the fastest speeds possible when they're downloading information on the
Internet or connecting to their corporate LAN," said Joseph Formichelli, CEO, Hayes Microcomputer
Products, Inc. "ADSL modems will provide the speed that our customers are demanding. Hayes is happy
to be partnered with Aware to bring this breakthrough technology to market."

ADSL is a modulation technique used for high speed data transport over existing phone lines. Aware's
ADSL technology is incorporated in the AD20msp910, a chipset offered by Analog Devices. This is the
second ADSL chipset to emerge from the broadband telecommunications partnership between Analog
Devices and Aware that began in 1993. The AD20msp910 chipset provides rate adaptive transmission,
adapting its data rate to the maximum possible speed on a given telephone line to within 32kbps, with
throughputs of up to 8Mbps downstream and 800kbps upstream. It uses the highly robust DMT
multicarrier modulation technique standardized by the ANSI T1E1.4 standards body.

Together with Aware's data communications software, the AD20msp910 provides end-to-end transport
of Ethernet, PPP or ATM packets, and is ideal for high speed Internet access and data services. The
Aware ADSL CPE solution provides a hardware and software package that builds upon Aware's core
ADSL technology expertise to provide a plug and play CPE solution for homes and businesses.

Based in Norcross, Georgia, Hayes markets its ULTRA, ACCURA, OPTIMA, Practical Peripherals and
CENTURY brands of modems, remote access servers, and terminal adapters along with Smartcom
communications software worldwide. Hayes introduced the PC modem in 1981. Today, with distributors in
more than 45 countries, it is one of the largest manufacturers of modems in the world. Aware,
headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts, is a leader in "last-mile" technology for broadband
communications and high-speed access to the Internet. The company's products allow users to
maximize use of scarce bandwidth resources for transmitting digitized data. Aware is developing ADSL
technology, software, modules, and modems for high-speed, interactive broadband network
applications.
