While I would prefer not to sink any more dollars in the P5-166 MB/CPU/memory in anticipation of coming upgrade - I would like it to NOT catch fire in the meantime.

Have you considered a CPU fan? I took the heat sink off of my Pentium 200 MMX and replaced it with a heat sink fan combo. The chip stays very cool... however I do not know if it was running hot before.
