Sudan and Malaysia look for Sudanese oil

KHARTOUM, Oct 31 (AFP) - A joint Sudanese and Malaysian expedition has set off for the northwest of Sudan to study whether the area has oil deposits, Sudan's energy ministry told the official Suna agency Saturday.

Hassan Mohamed Ali Al Tom, secretary-general of the ministry of energy and mining, said that sedimentary basins in the area suggested the existence of oil. Malaysia is already involved in oil operations in the southwest of the country.

The joint-mission is to carry out further geological tests that could help in promoting the project to international companies, Tom said. He added that the ministry is set to open talks with a consortium of international oil firms next week to discuss exploratory operations in the Adaryeil oil field in the Upper Nile region in the south. He said the consortium included the Qatari Gulf oil company which is already active in the Adaryeil fields.

He also said that final tests in the Red Sea region had already produced promising results, particularly in regard to natural gas deposits.
