The FDA or someone very like doesn't regulate DHAs but does regulate
baby formula under some 1970's legislation (introduced in response
to some scandal about sales of inferior formula in Africa) that I once
read. The law mandates that baby formula be as close to mother's milk
as possible, which is what hopes of having DHA required for pre-term
infant formula, if not all formula, were built upon. Even the company
isn't holding its breath for this to happen anytime soon, since the
law in application depends much more on politics and special interest
group lobbying efforts than on the actual science.
But since DHA is sold in health food shops in other forms, e.g.
in Martek's 'Neuoromins", if we knew how much to add, we
could mix it into our own baby formula cocktails.
