Planned obsolescence. Consider this, was it really an effort to conserve on data, programming space that led the early programers to keep the year digits at two? Perhaps it was at the behest of their employers, with an eye toward future sales. How many computers will become history as of Y2K? 50,000,000? What a way to generate sales revenue!!! Think how many there will be by the year 10,000. Billions?? This doesn't even begin to count the VCRs, other home appliances with embedded programming, industrial computerized machinery and more that will add to the scrap heap and need to be replaced. Even the garbage hauler profits. Now consider the new purchases of software, incredible, the amount that will be expended this time, and by an exponential factor the next time. What else might they be planning? The Y3K problem? You be the judge. Was it a slip up? Or a carefully considered plan??? Best, Savant |
