The race to wire China continues apace. The number of Internet users in the country doubled to 1.2 million in the first six months of 1998. The government is on course for its target of five million by the millennium, with industry analysts predicting that by 2002, 9.4 million citizens will be connected - more than any other country inAsia. But once you've got them online, you have to keep them in line. The authorities got a taste of the challenge ahead recently when criminals staged the country's first cyber bank robbery, siphoning off $31,000. The virtual swagmen were arrested and the government vowed to bolster online security, estimating that $64 billion-worth of assets are exposed on the Net. Greater security is also needed at www.human rights-china.org.
