HIGH-SPEED ADSL ACCESS GETS CHEAPER RATE FROM FCC
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Federal Communications Commission has ruled asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service should be classified as interstate long-distance rather than local service. This ruling makes the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) none too happy. The designation would make it unnecessary to compensate the RBOCs for completing ADSL Internet calls (the so-called local access fee). The RBOCs say long-distance compensation rules were never meant for Internet access. They're afraid cash will migrate to new local phone companies such as Intermedia Communications. The situation has so infuriated the RBOCs that they have reportedly resorted to withholding compensation from the new local phone companies. Our take: We want cheaper, faster Internet access now. Even at the expense of the big phone companies. This new rulings brings us closer.
