My view of the perfect SAN is where the OPTION exists from the client to connect directly to the storage, or to a server if higher performance is needed. (Client/Server applications and the like.)

No, not yet. However, this is where I think things are headed. Without widespread SAN adoption, there isn't any place for the networkers to fit. SANs change that dramatically, in effect opening up the whole Server to Storage area, and expanding it into the LAN.
