re: 1-axis mice. Been there; think I fixed it by using a q-tip soaked in isopropol alcohol to clean the roller bars. Also have read about but haven't tried boiling the mouse ball to restore tackiness.

Thanks I will try both yours and Zeuspaul's suggestions.

One other time I was using a no-name mouse in direct sunlight. The plastic case was not fully opaque: on a sunny day the light would swamp out the optical signal used to detect roller bar movement. That took a while to figure out! <g>

Several years ago I read in a news group about a person who had a similar problem with a Logitech mouse. He only had the problem late in the afternoon when the Sum came in his window at a particular angle. Any chance was that you.
