I just noticed this set of insights on what it has been like to own a Compaq consumer PC. Hmmmm....there could be a quality or customer service problem. This is a re-post from the Yahoo Finance DELL board:

<<Reason # 4857 Why Dell is
better than Compaq.

As long time posters know, I picked up a compaq presario on clearence for $700 over
the summer. At the time the machine was retailing on the web for $1399. I touted it as
another reason why compaq was behind Dell. There was no way they made money on this
machine, which was purchased through a retailer.

I called compaq today, because the Windows 98 setup was a mess. There was some
microsoft software installed that could not be removed without the original CD(which I did
not have. I guess it was installed at the store).

Compaq has a cute little CD normally ships with the system that will let you format the
hard disk and lay down the operating system along with compaq's goodies. I needed this,
wanted another 64 Meg in RAM and another 2 Megabytes of Video RAM in preparation
for making this my main development machine.

I was told that I could not do that. I had no warranty because I my serial number was
registered in someone elses name. I guess my box was a computer city return.

I can't pay for the CD for it is only available to those with a warranty. I can't order the
memory or video upgrades either.

I was quite willing to pay REAL MONEY for these items and they still refused. They want
an original store receipt. One of my associates bought it at the now Defunct Computer
City chain and the receipt is probably long gone.

Compaq does not care about me as a customer. They don't seem to care about the
slim(no none) possibility of retaining me as a future customer. All they care about is their
rules and regulations.

I've done upgrades on a number of customer's dell machines. All I've ever had to do is
give the model number and then order the parts. That is because they care about the
customer and don't needlessly hassle them.

Just another testimonial. My next machine, whenever that is will be a Dell. Period. End of
statement.
