A Computer Fairy Tale

A long, long time ago (seven years to be precise) there was a large computer company in Houston who thought that people would pay extra for their brand name. A smaller company in Austin thought that was ridiculous, and started selling PC's at a 25% discount.

The big company said "no, no, no, our customers will not abandon us" and "they know how much better our computers are". But 18 months later the big company's stock was trading at 25% of it's previous value, and the CEO had to take a very long vacation.

Any guesses who these companies are, and why I posted this on the Intel thread?
