USA Today - 11/02/98

Consumer spending - which represents about two-thirds of economic activity - grew at a healthy 3.9% annual rate in the third
quarter, after shooting up at a 6.1% rate during the first half of the year. However, to achieve that pace, American consumers
reduced their saving to almost nothing.

They saved just 0.1% of their after-tax income in the third quarter. That's the lowest savings rate since the department began
estimating it on a quarterly basis in 1946.
