CardioThoracic Systems Inc launches product early

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan 7 (Reuter) - CardioThoracic Systems Inc on Tuesday it has begun to market its new product, called the CTS MIDCAB System, six months ahead of schedule.

The CTS MIDCAB System enables cardiothoracic surgeons to conduct coronary bypass surgery while a patient's heart is still beating. In traditional bypass surgery, a patient's chest is opened and the heart is
stopped.

The MIDCAB procedure is intended to reduce the trauma, complications, operation time, recovery time and high costs of traditional bypass surgery. Over 500 procedures have been successfully performed
using the CTS MIDCAB System.

CardioThoracic shares were up 2-1/2 at 21-1/8 by mid-morning.

"The demand for education and training on minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) surgery, as well as demand for the CTS MIDCAB System, continues to grow and outpace our initial
expectations," Chief Executive Officer Richard Ferrari said in a statement.

CardioThoracic said it believes that as more surgeons gain experience with the beating heart operation, the numbers of patients considered suitable for the MIDCAB procedure will continue to increase.
