Fez _______________________ Dell Introduces PowerEdge 6350: Smallest, Most Powerful Standards-Based Server in Its Class
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1998--
Innovative System Designed for Space-Conscious Corporate Data Centers Where Storage Consolidation, Clustering and Centralized Computing Are
Critical
Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:DELL) -- the No. 2 server vendor in the United States and No. 4 worldwide(1) -- today announced the Dell(R) PowerEdge(R) 6350, a compact, full-featured server designed for corporate data centers where storage consolidation, clustering and centralized computing are critical.
The enterprise-class PowerEdge 6350 server is immediately available worldwide starting at $7,694. With the PowerEdge 6350, Dell takes a leadership position in providing the smallest, most powerful industry-standard computing platform in its class. The server is certified to run mainstream corporate business applications including Oracle8(tm) and Microsoft(R) SQL Server(tm) database applications and enterprise resource planning software such as SAP R/3(R). The PowerEdge 6350 also is well-suited for messaging and Internet server applications. As the fastest growing server vendor in the world(2), Dell continues to provide innovative servers and storage products by developing superior system designs -- around industry standard server components -- that meet a wide-range of customers' computing environments.
"Dell is focused on delivering highly reliable server products that address the space constraints and performance needs of enterprise customers," said Michael Lambert, senior vice president, Dell Enterprise Systems Group. "The size of the PowerEdge 6350 provides companies tremendous flexibility to add capacity to their data centers as their business grows."
Dell reduced the size of its high-end PowerEdge 6300 by nearly 60 percent while maintaining the same four-processor capability based on Intel's most powerful and scalable Pentium(R) II Xeon(tm) processors. The server's 4U height, which is less than seven inches (1U=1.75 inches), lets customers easily fit up to 10 PowerEdge 6350 servers in a standard rack enclosure without compromising system expandability. Four 64-bit and three 32-bit Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots allow customers to divide higher and lower speed data to help maximize system performance. The hot-pluggability of the PCI slots enable quick connections to external devices like remote server management controllers or storage systems.
One PowerEdge 6350 will support up to three Dell PowerVault(tm) 650F storage systems for a total external storage capacity of up to six terabytes (6,000 gigabytes) of data. Internally, the PowerEdge 6350 supports up to 27GB of storage, up to 4GB of error checking and correcting (ECC) memory and four megabytes (MB) of level two cache. (Sample configurations and pricing attached.)
Like the PowerEdge 6300, the PowerEdge 6350 server is built for high reliability. It is designed to handle an Internet Service Provider's (ISP) or large corporate customers' mission critical computing requirements such as on-line transaction processing, data warehouses and corporate messaging services. Because of its smaller size, the server will be appealing to customers who want to centralize applications or consolidate their servers and storage in a corporate data center and is well suited for corporate intranet, extranet and remote access applications where reliability and processing power are important. Branch offices at banks and telecommunication facilities will find the PowerEdge 6350 ideal as a replicated site-server where high performance and data redundancy are critical. In these environments, the PowerEdge 6350 can be combined with telecommunications equipment, storage devices and backup power supplies to provide a centralized server solution for large remote-site environments.
Two PowerEdge 6350 servers can be clustered with Dell's PowerVault 650F using Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) software for added levels of system uptime or Oracle Parallel Server for additional uptime and scalability.
Every PowerEdge 6350 can be built-to-order and shipped directly from the factory, offering customers the exact configuration they want for their computing environment. Microsoft Windows NT(R) Server 4.0, Novell(R) intraNetWare(R) 4.11 and NetWare(R) 5 operating systems can be factory-installed on all Dell PowerEdge servers, including the new PowerEdge 6350. Dell's build-to-order capability and factory-installation program can reduce costs and risk for the customer and help ensure product quality and consistency when purchasing multiple servers.
Other operating systems or software applications can be configured, tested and installed through DellPlus Server Integration, a value-added service for customers who require more complex, or specialized server solutions, that are pre-configured by Dell and shipped to the customer ready-to-use.
The PowerEdge 6350 ships with ready-to-run manageability features that easily tie into a company's systems and network management applications or frameworks. These features support the Dell OpenManage(tm) systems management strategy that helps customers gain control over their computer systems while also helping to reduce the cost of owning them. As part of that strategy, all Dell PowerEdge servers come installed with HP OpenView(R) Network Node Manager Special Edition. An optional Dell Remote Assistant Card (version 2) is available with the PowerEdge 6350 to help system administrators remotely manage their servers via modem or local area network. Called DRAC 2, this adapter card allows system administrators to remotely access, diagnose and manage their servers even if the operating system is unresponsive or the system has lost power. |
