Schering-Plough and Pharmacopeia form New Research Collaboration:
biz.yahoo.com

[excerpt]......
Under terms of the new agreement, Pharmacopeia will create novel combinatorial libraries for use by Schering-Plough scientists and will optimize and undertake screening of lead compounds against therapeutic targets of interest to Schering-Plough. Pharmacopeia will receive approximately $60 million in research funding over the five-year term of the agreement. The potential value of the collaboration may increase significantly as Pharmacopeia will be entitled to milestone and royalty payments as compounds progress through development and commercialization. Further financial terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

$60 million in research funding is huge. This is more indirect evidence that PCOP's collaborations are generating good drug candidates. Just in the last year we've seen four deals with existing partners that could be classified as follow-on deals:
~ expansions of the programs with Berlex and Organon;
~ a new collaboration with Schering AG which must have been influenced by results in the ongoing Berlex program;
~ today's announcement.

There was also the initial collaboration (worth up to $40M) with Bristol-Myers Squibb announced in December 1997.

When they get something in clinical trials, maybe we'll see some direct evidence. It's taking a bit longer than the projections of a few years ago for an IND to be filed, but they seem to be getting there. I'm looking forward to it.
