It's the MMX thing. Nothing to worry about, IMO.
You see, the current MMX release has a small problem, unless it's been fixed. Apparently, the design is that it uses the same registers for floating point and DSP/multimedia operations. Therefore, it takes something on the order of 50 CPU cycles to switch between a FP operation and a multimedia operation. Doesn't seem like much at 133MHZ and up clock speeds, but for something like that, 50 cycles is an eternity.
I recall reading that it's caused by the basic architecture of Intel's MMX chip. If so, the LAST thing someone would want is that CPU handling their modem functions, especially at higher speeds.
Just another opportunity to buy for cheap. |
