When I was a boy in Washington DC Everett Dirksen was Senate Minority Leader and Charley Halleck was House Minority Leader. We were treated to "The Ev and Charley Show" whenever the press wanted a Republican response to a JFK or LBJ initiative. I always enjoyed Dirksen's yearly homage to... the marigold? Was that what it was? There was also the Dirksenism "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you are talking about real money..." And isn't former Senator Howard Baker married to Dirksen's daughter?
