SilkRoad Technology Significantly Furthers University Distance Learning Program; Internship Opportunities Made Available
SilkRoad, Inc., an innovative, networking technology company, and San Diego State University (SDSU), the largest university in the California State University system, today announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in which SilkRoad will provide its newly-patented, bandwidth-expanding technology to further the University's international distance learning program. SilkRoad's groundbreaking technology makes interactive distance learning possible with the ability to send and receive massive amounts of voice, video and data, in real-time. SilkRoad will also provide internship opportunities for university students to gain valuable, "hands-on" experience in optical networking research and development. SilkRoad's unique technology, SilkRoad Refractive Synchronization Communication (SRSC(R)), will allow San Diego State University to fully realize its vision of providing quality education to people in developing communities worldwide, specifically the Caspian Sea, Central Asia, Pacific Asia, the Middle East and Western Africa. SilkRoad's SRSC substantially increases the capacity of information that can be carried on a fiber optic network, with the potential to provide virtually unlimited bandwidth. (Editors' note: Please see related 11/3/98 releases regarding the unveiling of SilkRoad's technology.) "San Diego State University prides itself as a premier academic institution and is committed to the educational development of all people, regardless of geography," said Dr. William Locke, Dean Global Program Development, Office of the President, San Diego State University. "SilkRoad's remarkable technology allows us the opportunity to provide a strong, interactive curriculum to people worldwide." "Businesses and organizations, such as SDSU, can not achieve their respective communications goals with today's current networking technologies," said Kevin C. Doria, SilkRoad President and CEO. "We are very pleased that our technology is helping such a noble and forward-thinking program as SDSU's international distance learning achieve its potential." In addition to the international distance learning project, SilkRoad will also be providing internships at its corporate laboratory allowing students the opportunity for hands-on instruction and research. Dr. James R. Palmer, J.D., PhD., inventor of SRSC technology and SilkRoad's Chief Technology Officer and Chairman, has been named an adjunct professor in SDSU's College of Sciences, and will lead this effort with faculty from SDSU.
