Sun Delivers End-to-End Product Solutions for Network-Enabled Embedded Market

November 4, 1998

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via
NewsEdge Corporation -- Real-Time
Operating System, Applications and
Management Products to Enable Millions of
New Information Appliances

On the Network

Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced
End-To-End product solutions for enabling
new embedded market opportunities. Sun, a
leader in network computing for the
enterprise, is delivering solutions that enable
the creation of a world-wide network of
devices that link the consumer to a wealth of
information, entertainment and business
services. Using Sun's powerful backend
servers and network-enabled client software
solutions, businesses can take advantage of
rapidly expanding service delivery networks
to reach new customers at home, in the
office and on the road.

Sun's complete range of network-enabled
embedded products allow device
manufacturers and service providers to
address these new market opportunities
today. ChorusOS(TM) and JavaOS(TM) for
Consumers(TM) real-time embedded systems
software help to run both network switches
and the access-devices that plug-in to the
network. A suite of web-based consumer
applications and built-in dynamic device
management using the Java(TM) Dynamic
Management Kit(TM) software makes these
networked devices more functional and
easy-to-use for consumers than ever before.

"In addition to providing the Java(TM)
platform technologies to developers we are
also providing implementations to customers
looking for turnkey solutions," said Mark
Tolliver, President of Suns Consumer and
Embedded Division. "With ChorusOS as the
foundation, and Java technology as the
bricks and mortar, Sun is providing complete
solutions to build network-aware devices."

ChorusOS(TM) and Sun(TM) Embedded
Workshop 2.0

ChorusOS 3.2 - the cornerstone of Sun's
embedded product offering, is available
today. A robust, real-time operating system
optimized for telecommunications, ChorusOS
provides manufacturers with exceptional
reliability and high-availability, at levels
suitable for mission-critical central switch
room environments. The modular architecture
of ChorusOS with replaceable system
components, enables the implementation of
highly scalable embedded solutions, from
mobile phones to high-end network
equipment.

To enable embedded developers to get their
job done more quickly, new Sun(TM)
Embedded Workshop 2.0 software provides a
state of the art, integrated development
environment for the ChorusOS and JavaOS
for consumers operating systems. It includes
an easy-to-use graphical user interface, and
a complete host-target toolset. A
configuration tool enables tailoring of
operating system implementations according
to target product requirements. The Sun
Embedded Workshop software is available for
the Solaris(TM) operating environment,
Windows NT and HP-UX and supports a
multitude of processor architectures.

JavaOS for Consumers

Leveraging the unique ChorusOS
componentized OS architecture, JavaOS for
Consumers software provides a small
footprint and efficient implementation of the
PersonalJava(TM) application environment.
This operating system platform solution is
ideal for networked consumer appliances
such as Web-phones, set-top boxes and
handheld computing devices. JavaOS for
Consumers optimizes the PersonalJava
environment by providing native thread
support and access to real-time kernel
features thus enabling the concurrent
execution of Java-based applications and
real-time applications.

JavaOS for Consumers is currently available
on reference platforms based on the
PowerPC, x86 and SPARC(TM) architectures.
At the Embedded Systems West Conference
it will be demonstrated on Intel's StrongARM
reference platform.

Personal Applications

Sun Personal Applications(TM) are a new line
of compact, memory-efficient applications
designed specifically for Internet-connected
consumer devices. The result of the recent
acquisition of Beduin, Communications, Inc.,
these applications provide core functionality
for users to run consumer devices including,
Web browsers, e-mail clients, Personal Digital
Assistants or organizers, Internet screen
phones, wireless phones, set-top boxes, and
car navigation systems.

The first Personal Application product, a
compact browser, is written entirely in the
Java programming language and supports
today's Internet standards to ensure users
can access a wide range of Web pages. The
browser provides integrated telephony
capabilities that may allow a user to click on
a phone number in a Web page and dial the
number automatically. The browser is
scheduled to ship by the end of this calendar
year. Additional applications will follow to
complete the suite, including an email and
organizer application.

Java(TM) Dynamic Management Kit(TM)

The Java Dynamic Management Kit 3.0 is the
industry's first Java-based solution for
building and distributing network management
intelligence into Java technology enabled
appliances. It has been designed to allow
service providers to deliver a new generation
of high-quality services to users faster and
more cost effectively.

The powerful technology provided by Java
Dynamic Management Kit can be used to
develop and deploy just-in-time policy based
services to manage levels of service,
security, user environment or system
operations over large volumes of networked
devices -- so they can be dynamically
managed and updated easily from a central
location. Java Dynamic Management Kit
provides a small footprint core management
runtime (150k) that can be embedded in
systems, applications, datacom equipment or
new consumer devices such as webphones,
set-top-boxes or home automation devices.
Java Dynamic Management Kit provides a
library of reusable JavaBeans(TM) for
management which are dynamically
downloadable into the core management
runtime. These JavaBeans allow fast and
cost-effective creation of smart Java-based
agents, proxy managers as well as embedded
management components for new or existing
management applications. New features
include enhanced capabilities for Web-based
distributed management, automatic
discovery, enhanced security, Jini(TM)
technology and CORBA compatibility.
