"IDC Forecasts Unprecedented Growth in Global Usage of the Internet and the World Wide Web New IDC Research Study Provides Sizing and Forecast of the Market for Internet Commerce
Source: PR Newswire
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc. -- Based on its Internet Commerce Market Model(TM), International Data Corporation (IDC) is predicting unprecedented growth in the use of the Internet and the World Wide Web on a global scale. Research conducted by IDC's Internet program reveals this growth will be accompanied by an increase in the number of users that buy and sell goods and services available on the World Wide Web; this growth will drive commerce on the Internet to $100 billion in 2000.
These IDC forecasts supersede any previous ones published by IDC and IDC/LINK and are somewhat higher for Web use and commerce than previous forecasts. According to John Gantz, senior vice president of IDC's Personal Systems, Workgroup Applications, and Services research groups, the difference is the result of new information from IDC's extensive global primary research efforts supporting the Internet Commerce Market Model. IDC's Internet Commerce Market Model offers the industry's single-most-comprehensive picture of the number of users on the Web and the amount of commerce they are conducting. It is based on more than 40,000 primary research interviews per year in 17 countries and on IDC's vaunted supply-side forecasts for PCs, Internet appliances, modems, and other technologies.
Particularly surprising results of IDC's research reveal the amount of commerce being conducted over the Internet is around $3 billion in 1996, with more than one-third of those purchases completed on the Web itself. Additional key findings of this research include:
-- The number of devices accessing the Web will grow from 12.6 million worldwide at yearend 1995 to 233.3 million at yearend 2000.
-- The number of users accessing the Web will grow from 16.1 million at yearend 1995 to 163.0 million at yearend 2000.
-- The percentage of users buying goods and services on the Web will grow modestly -- from 24 percent in December 1995 to 28 percent in December 2000. This modest growth is only the result of the influx of international users; in the United States, the percentage of users who are "buyers" will grow from 29 percent to 45 percent.
-- IDC's primary research indicates that already one-third of transactions are completed over the Web (as opposed to fax or phone). By 2000, that fraction should be much greater than two-thirds.
