To all: Akzo announces 3 million pound additional expansion with plans to add 10 million by 2000.

In yesterday's Performance Materials newsletter, Akzo was quoted that the 3 million pound expansion in 1997 will bring them to 8 million pounds capability. A list of publically announced carbon fiber expansions and (effectivity):

Zoltek 5 million (1997) ?? (1999)
Akzo 3 million (1998) 7 (2000)
Aldila 2.5 million (1998) 2.5 (2000)
RK 2 million (1998)
Toray 4 million (1998) 4 (2000)
Toho 2 million (1997)
Hexcel 1 million (1997)
Amoco 2 million (1997) actually available in 1996 but no precursor.

So, where is all this fiber going to be sold? The world market today is less than 25 million. Looks to me like lots of margin pressure as people get desperate to sell capacity. And, I don't think we've heard from all the players yet. Look for Monsanto, Cytec and/or Owens Corning to enter as well.
