Steve,

Read this thread:

techstocks.com

"...Another plus is sound quality. The real competitor to AURL in therms of board-maker
accounts are Cirrus Logic (Crystal), ESST and Yamaha. If You forget about 3-D audio
features, just looking to plain pure sound quality, even here the Vortex excels over ESS
and Yamaha. Arny Krueger at pcavtech.com does * REAL * soundcard &
audio gear tests with a methodology. I mean numbers not feelings. He finds that the
quality ranking (THD, S/N, dynamic range) is (in the PCI field) at the moment:
1) Ensoniq series (1370, SB!Live)
2) Aureal Vortex 1
3) S3 Sonic Vibes
4) YMF-724 (that's the new PCI chip from Yamaha)
5) ESS-Maestro 2
6) ESS-Maestro 1

Vortex 1 had S/N ratio of 75-80, Ensoniq & SB!Live near 90. This was before the
Vortex 2 hits the market. A test will soon be conducted as I know Mr. Krueger. I
myself am ready to get the Diamond MX300 pretty soon - or the Turtle Beach
Montego 2 - yet have to decide btw. the two....."

I thought ESS Maestro has really good audio quality. Is it the case?
