My first reaction to your post was how does that work?, i.e., helping funding a competition business. Then I remembered that, in the beginning, AMD made sense amplifiers and the like types of chips. Was that it, that they weren't considered a competitor by their charter? Also, sense amps kind of go with memory chips, the main Intel product at the time.
