I'm always impressed by your technical knowledge - you've obviously got a great background in networking technology, however rudimentary routing/layer 3 switching can now be done in silicon. Gary, I'm not sure what you mean--routing done in silicon? You mean silicon DRAMs? Yes, routers use DRAMs to hold their routing tables. Even the old Cisco AGS's do that. If you're talking about ROM or other non-volatile silicon, well then that's switching, not routing. Yes, IP switching can be done with devices with their kernel stored in non-volatile silicon. On the other hand, IP routing is done by routers, which I define as devices with a software kernel. bucky89
