You're referring to the situation as it stood in August and early September. The Democrats were narrowing the races since then and the Republicans campaigned not to lose by not advancing agendas for the campaigns. The Republicans also are heavily focused in the South where the conservative votes can be had by traditional conservative Democrats. All the Presidential elections since 1976 have been won by governors and vice presidents (1). Jesse Ventura showed that a conservative independent with a moderate social agenda will win handily over the Democrats.
