Analog Devices and Institute for Information Industry Agree to Advance ADSL Adoption in Taiwan

- ADI Signs Letter of Intent with Leading Taiwanese Technology Consortium

to Lend Expertise in Creating ADSL Interoperability Lab in Taipei -

NORWOOD, Mass., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices (NYSE: ADI) today announced it has signed a Letter of Intent with the Institute for Information Industry (III), a leading government-sponsored Taiwanese technology group, to join in a collaborative effort to foster the adoption of ADSL technology solutions in Taiwan. Under the terms of this initial agreement, ADI will provide training support on its ADSL technology to III consortium members, enabling the communications equipment manufacturing community to migrate from analog-based modems to ADSL design solutions using ADI technology. A formal contract is expected to be concluded by year's end, according to both parties.

"ADI is the ideal partner for III's ADSL education drive, because ADI's chipset is a comprehensive, fast-to-market solution used worldwide that spans across all major categories of communications equipment, including central office switches, digital loop carriers, analog modems and routers," said General Kuo Yun, President of the Taipei-based III organization. "This cooperative effort will assist III's plan to create an ADSL lab in Taipei and will enable our manufacturers to transition to ADSL equipment solutions quickly and cost-effectively."

"Analog Devices is committed to promoting the adoption of standards-based ADSL as a global, mass market communications solution, and we are pleased and honored that the III has asked us to provide its members with hands-on training regarding the latest advances in ADSL technology," said Russ Johnsen, Vice President and General Manager, Analog Devices' Communications Division. "Our advanced DMT (discrete multi-tone) standards-based ADSL chipset solution is used by more of the world's leading communications equipment makers than any other supplier and has become a standard in the industry by offering unparalleled performance, functionality and interoperability."

The DMT-based AD20msp910 chipset from Analog Devices, Inc., released last year, speeds and simplifies development of ADSL modems for high-speed Internet access and multimedia services. The next-generation AD20msp918, announced September 28, 1998, adds ATM functionality, improved performance and support for ADSL over ISDN for the European market. This chipset is fully compliant to the new standards including ITU G.922.1 for splitterless, and G.922.2 for full-rate, and Annex B for ADSL and ISDN, as well as ANSI Issue 2 and ETSI TR328. Both are complete solutions, including micro-controller and software from development partner Aware, Inc. Using these comprehensive chipset solutions, manufacturers can produce ADSL modems today, as well as develop a new generation of ADSL modems more quickly and cost-effectively than ever before.

ADI in ADSL

With more than 50 design wins, Analog Devices is the market leader in supplying standard-compliant ADSL chipsets to the world's leading communications equipment makers including 3Com Corporation, ADC Telecommunications, Diamond Lane, Efficient Networks, Ericsson, ECI Telecom,

Fujitsu, Lucent, Newbridge Networks, Nortel Networks, Pulsecom, Samsung and Sumitomo. ADI is an active member of the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG). The UAWG comprises leading PC vendors and telecommunications leaders with a goal of proposing a simplified version of ADSL which will deliver to consumers high-speed modem communications over existing phone lines based on an open, interoperable ITU standard. Analog Devices is also a founding member of the ADSL Forum, established to advance worldwide deployment of the ANSI standard through education and awareness efforts.
