Major companies which are pooling intelligence information on services suppliers say that mainframe capacity to deal with year 2000 testing is quickly running out.

Members of the Outsourcing Council, a new user group of firms which have contracted out IT services, say some top-tier suppliers are reaching a point where they will be unable to meet demand for machine capacity.

The message is: reserve test time now, reserve people now, and agree a price. The resourcing problem is worse than expected," said Alistair Henderson-Begg, former head of outsourcing (commercial) at British Aerospace, and chairman of the Outsourcing Council. . . .

And some services suppliers have confirmed to Computer Weekly that they cannot guarantee they will provide enough machine time for testing. Computer Sciences said it expected some emergencies but is working with customers to minimise the number and scale.

"Our clients will not be able to test everything. We are advising them to limit testing to what is business critical," said a spokeswoman for one services firm. . . .

Stan Goldman, president of consultancy TBI, predicted what he called a bow-wave of demand for machine capacity next year. He said only one in 10 firms had been able to adhere to key year 2000 milestones, and of the total money allocated to remedying the date problem, just 20% had been spent by mid-1998. . . .
