The reliability of whispernumbers.com is questionable, but
there is no doubt that such numbers do exist. As an expectation barometer, they're not published like IBES but are awared by traders, who use them to manage short-term pricing, spreads, and options volatility. For ex., if YHOO's actual eps historically grows 50-100% per quarter, and analyst concensus only shows a 20-30% growth. Which numbers do you think the market will trade on around earnings period? CSCO is a great company, but simply matching or barely beating expectation doesn't justify a PE of 74. That's retail stock performance, not high-tech blue chip. Like any rumors, whisper
numbers are also passed around with merger, split, and buyback.
