Wired, Inc. Announces QuickTime-to-MPEG2 Transcoder
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1998--Wired, Inc. today announced the MediaPress Transcoder(TM), the industry's fastest solution for converting QuickTime files to MPEG2.
MediaPress Transcoder
The MediaPress Transcoder is a software application designed to work in conjunction with the company's MediaPress MPEG2 encoder. By leveraging the speed of the MediaPress encoder, Wired's transcoder delivers MPEG2 compression from any QuickTime movie up to 20 times faster than software-only MPEG2 compression applications.
The full feature set of MediaPress is available for the MediaPress Transcoder, including VBR and GOP parameter settings.
The MediaPress Transcoder takes any Quicktime movie and encodes it into an MPEG2 stream without converting the data into the analog domain. By handling the encoding in the digital domain, the MediaPress Transcoder completely eliminates conversion artifacts.
The company plans to add support to the MediaPress Transcoder for off-line compression of additional file formats, including OMFI.
"The MediaPress Transcoder is a powerful tool for any video editor," states Mark Bain, Wired's president. "Once the final edited movie is output to disk, it can be read into the transcoder and immediately MPEG2 compressed. No external VCRs or tapes are required. And no analog conversion is necessary."
MediaPress Realtime Encoder
The MediaPress, introduced earlier this year, is Wired's newest addition to the company's line of realtime MPEG encoders. Available for Macintosh(R), Window95(R) and Windows98(R), MediaPress is a single 7-inch PCI card that captures and compresses video and audio signals into fully compatible MPEG1 or MPEG2 bitstreams for media network transmissions and DVD/SuperVCD authoring.
MediaPress delivers professional quality results at a price significantly below the competition by applying a modular approach.
"Wired offers D1 and Component Interfaces, Deck Control and the new Transcoder as options to the MediaPress encoder," explains Michael Whittingham, the company's vice president of engineering.
"Many of our customers don't have D1 decks, so why should they be forced to pay a premium for an expensive feature they don't need? Our modular approach allows us to deliver quality comparable to encoders costing five times the price, without asking our customers to sacrifice compatibility and upgradeability."
Pricing & Availability
The MediaPress Transcoder for PowerMacintosh(R) computers will begin shipping November 23rd. Versions for Windows95(R) and Windows98(R) are expected in Q4, and a WindowsNT(R) version will ship in Q1 of 1999. Wired's suggested retail price for the MediaPress Transcoder is $999. The suggested retail price for the MediaPress realtime encoder is $4,999.
