You underestimate the intricateness of tech products. To be honest, it wouldn't be much fun investing in tech stocks if everything was nice and predictable. If you want to invest only in companies where management is gifted with prescience, invest in something else. Even investing in potatoes is dangerous; I'd guess their "bad" management can't predict the weather ;).

Seriously, there is always a guessing game at hand as to when product issues are resolved. When did Microsoft announce Windows95, nee sth else, was going to be available initially?

And one of the variables this quarter was the product mix. How many people will buy the old machines cheaply because they need applications that aren't certified on the new platforms, and how many will buy the new machines, get them going, and wait for the applications?

If you have a way of predicting this in a failsafe way, be sure to let me know now. This will save SGI unpleasant sursprises, as Ed McCracken will undoubtedly believe me when I tell him I found a perfect predictor. And you'll save your SGI stock an unpleasant surprise next time around ;).
