If the Wall Street Journal is accurate, and AT&T plans to join along with Airtouch, could this mean that AT&T is making a move - no matter how small and tentative - toward CDMA and (perhaps) a deemphasis on TDMA.

Exactly what I was thinking. What a major coup for the Q! that would be. THAT would be the major event that would bring the Q! in from the cold, out of Rodney Dangerfield-land; that or SBC switching over (less likely). Perhaps even now AT&T is salivating over the increased capacity inherent in CDMA as they continue to add subscribers hand over fist... and remember, they already run a CDMA system in their JV w/ATI.
