E.Coli Beef Recall by IBP

I heard on the TV this morning that there was a large beef recall due to ecoli.

I'm not sure if we'll see the type of spikes we saw when we were on the NASDAQ but I thought it was worth mentioning as an FYI.

Thursday November 5 12:45 AM EDT

Nebraska Company Recalls Beef In E.Coli Scare

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (Reuters) - IBP Inc. (NYSE:IBP - news), the world's largest processor of fresh beef, said Wednesday it was voluntarily recalling all ground beef produced at its plant in Dakota City, Nebraska, on Oct. 22 because a sample may have contained the deadly bacteria E.coli 0157:H7.

The company said the recall involves 556,226 pounds of ground beef, much of which is believed to have already been consumed. IBP said its officials know of no illnesses associated with the beef produced on that day.

IBP said officials of the U.S. Department of Agriculture had been notified and were now testing the product.

Most of the ground beef is further processed by grocers and restaurants before being eaten, so there is no brand name, product code or production lot numbers for consumers to check.

The company said thorough cooking kills harmful bacteria, including E.coli 0157:H7.

Retailers, food service operations and distributors in a total of 33 states have been identified as having received the ground beef.

Earlier this year, IBP recalled a shipment of 282,129 pounds of beef after a sample was found to be tainted by the same potentially deadly bacteria. The suspect beef on that occasion was produced by an IBP plant in Geneseo, Illinois.
