Microsoft tried first Nokia, then Motorola and after those stinging rejections turned to Qualcomm. Bill had literally no options left... all the companies with 10% or more of the global handset market share are backing Symbian and are hostile towards Microsoft's attempts to infiltrate the mobile market. At least eight of the world's top ten manufacturers are expected to support Symbian. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft/Qualcomm try to muster support... they could conceivably try to snag some Korean companies. It will be an uphill battle even there; I'm not sure whether Samsung and others are waiting in line to pay more licensing fees to Qualcomm when the alternative is being part of a large consortium where no one mobile company calls the shots.
