FYI HP #1 PC for Sept.

HP Pavilion PC Ranks No. 1 For September, With Growth of More Than 300 Percent
HP Pavilion Sales-growth Rate Exceeds 220 Percent Year-to-date; Accelerated Pace Narrows Gap Between HP and No. 1 Position
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that its HP Pavilion home PC line was the top-selling vendor of consumer desktop PCs for the month of September, capturing 34.4 percent market share compared with Compaq's 23.2 percent market share, according to Intelect ASW L.L.C. (1)

According to the study, the HP Pavilion home PC line grew at a rate of 305 percent for September 1998, vs. September 1997, compared with Compaq's negative 5 percent growth.

Since the introduction of the HP Pavilion PC line in 1995, HP has steadily gained market share, enabling the company to earn the No. 2 position among home PC vendors at retail. The HP Pavilion home PC line grew at a rate of 228 percent for the first nine months of calendar 1998, according to Intelect ASW L.L.C. The recent, accelerated growth positions HP to achieve its goal of becoming the No. 1 home PC vendor at retail by the end of the year 2000.

''Our figures show that HP's sales growth rate increased by 305 percent in September and 228 percent year-to-date,'' said Carl Ravitch, executive vice president, Intelect ASW L.L.C. ''HP has consistently ranked among the top home PC vendors for the past three years and has markedly pulled away from the rest of the pack. Looking at the trend line, HP has become a serious threat to the current leader.''

As further evidence of HP's strengthening market position, the HP Pavilion 6350 and 6330 units held the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, among individual PC models, according to point-of-sale information by Intelect ASW L.L.C.

''We believe that our market success is a testament to our commitment to delivering performance and value to consumers,'' said Harry W. (Webb) McKinney, general manager of HP's Home Products Division. ''HP is priced aggressively and has consistently been rated No. 1 in quality, support and customer satisfaction.''
