Don,I don't think silver is used in Japan for holding diamonds, at least not in rings.White gold, which is an alloy of gold,silver copper,nickel looks like silver but is much harder than silver and much more difficult to work with it too, but is a lot cheaper than platinum, which is still more difficult to work with, believe me, I did work with it until I retired.
