Dave, I believe this may have been a rhetorical question. However the privitized public services that existed at the turn of the century have been discussed a few times by political pundits on talk shows etc. and the fire dept example is indeed accurate apparently. This book Martin Dressler won the pulitzer prize primarily for its accurate depiction of the period. Its not a very good book imo though, but its quick reading. amazon.com
