NEW YORK, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Wireless telecommunications equipment maker Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq:QCOM - news) and software giant Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) next week will launch a new company that will focus on wireless communications, information technology and computing, Qualcomm said.
Qualcomm and Microsoft will introduce the new company, name its chief executive officer and demonstrate the services it will offer at a Nov. 10 press conference at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Wash., Qualcomm said.
The location was changed from Qualcomm's San Diego headquarters due to a scheduling conflict with Microsoft executives, Qualcomm said.
The new company will be jointly funded by both Qualcomm and Microsoft. Additional details were not available. Microsoft could not be immediately reached for comment.
Analysts who track the companies said they had not yet been briefed on the new venture but expect the new company will provide wireless phones with sophisticated data capabilities using Microsoft's Windows CE operation system.
Windows CE is a stripped-down version of Windows 95 being used in everything from handheld personal digital assistants to television set-top boxes.
Any move by Microsoft into the wireless data arena would face stiff competition from Symbian, the growing alliance centered on Psion Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: PON.L), the British maker of hand-held computers.
Chipmaker Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) recently joined the alliance, which also includes mobile phone makers Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson and Nokia Group and is aimed at producing a new generation of mobile communications and wireless products. The alliance is seen as one of the toughest challenges to Microsoft's 2-year-old Windows CE operating system.
The venture with Microsoft would mark a continued effort by Qualcomm to use its CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, technology to offer wireless data services and products rather than just voice services, analysts said. CDMA technology aims to improve call quality and reduce the number of disconnected phone calls for digital cellular service.
''The general direction of all the wireless companies has been to incorporate data capabilities as a way to differentiate themselves. Voice is getting very commoditized and the wireless segment is seeing the same shift that the wireline business has seen -- a focus on data as a growth area,'' E. Lawrence Hickey, a communications equipment analyst with First Analysis, said.
Qualcomm's stock fell $2.625 to $55, while Microsoft added 31 cents to $105.50, both on Nasdaq.
After the stock market closed on Tuesday, Qualcomm posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings of $40 million, or 54 cents per diluted share, up from $30 million, or 42 cents a year before. Fourth-quarter revenues increased 54 percent to $926 million from $601 million a year ago.
Last month Qualcomm completed the spin-off of its equity investments in some wireless operators to form Leap Wireless International Inc. (Nasdaq:LWIN - news).
